Bingyuan modern ABO AU where Shen Yuan tutors sweet white lotus Luo Binghe and dutifully sends him off to university all prepped and ready to take the world by storm, and then three years later Omega Binghe shows up on his doorstep with a baby, all washed out with his prospects ruined and the father in the wind.

Beta Shen Yuan, furious, is determined to look after Luo Binghe and his adorable baby whilst tracking down the feckless Alpha involved and then... castrating him? Forcing him to step up? One of the two at least!

Only it turns out:

-Baby isn't actually Luo Binghe's

-Luo Binghe isn't an Omega

-Binghe also didn't wash out and in fact just came into a massive inheritance

He didn't even know Shen Yuan was living at the apartment he went to, he was bringing the baby to Shen Jiu in order to blackmail him. The baby is SJ's and Omega Yue Qingyuan's, and had been quietly sent away to avoid scandal. As the next phase of Luo Binghe's hundred-step plan to marrying Shen Laoshi, cuddling the baby in a vaguely sinister fashion while making thinly-veiled threats was vital to blocking Shen Jiu's inevitable attempts to interfere with Binghe's pursuit of his younger brother.

But then Shen Yuan opened the door and promptly drew all the wrong conclusions, and now Binghe is rethinking his entire strategy, furiously googling Alpha-to-Omega transition options and making Mobei Jun make Shang Qinghua find out how to fake a birth certificate for a stolen baby.

Call me homophobic, but I don't actually think it's great representation to stick a complex, dynamic, newly-realized bisexual character permanently with a flat, boring, underdeveloped love interest just because that was the first guy who showed interest.

#in my hater era #like what you like #but goddamn #the argument that this is somehow outstanding queer representation is baffling #they have had 13 episodes to DO something with this character and they have chosen not to #no development anywhere #even though they literally brought him back so there is built-in background ripe for the picking #and yet #anti bucktommy #anti tommy kinard #the saddest part is #i don't even hate him #he's not important enough to hate #there is just absolutely nothing to him #and that's sad because whether or not he was intended to be long-term or endgame #the writers are better than this and the character SHOULD have SOME development #like why are we all swooning over 911 shoehorning in a returning character to tell a bi buck story #but treating that character like the most expendable love interest in history #i don't like him but actually i think queer characters #and especially ones who are part of such a major later-in-life bisexual realization storyline for a beloved main #deserve a little more respect than what 911 has been giving him #anyway #might delete later i don't know #also i need to stop looking at the 911 subreddit #worst takes i've ever seen that place is a cesspool

I'm just saying, Orym knows something about being stuck on the death of your first love. Of being constantly reminded of them and their death, seeing signs of them every day, making it that much harder to get over them.

But now he has found a new love, and despite the seeing Will several times, being reminded of him every time he looks at the moons or swings his sword, he is ready to move forward. "It's pretty great, living a lifetime." He wants to try again.

If anyone would have some wise words for Keyleth to help her get through this, it would be him.

(note: this is purely from a character perspective, not a comment on CCs.)

grian and scar have now both been in opposite positions to the original 'cactus ring', and it's so interesting to compare their attitudes to sacrifice on both ends. whether or not scar threw the fight in the cactus ring, he did offer for grian to kill him before it began. grian declined this, but was clearly fighting with the intention to win during the fight itself – he's giving scar a chance, but not sacrificing.

in secret life, scar's on the other end of things. he's fighting another winner – who herself has been sacrificed for previously – and, like grian, is going into what he assumes to be a fair fight... but which is in his favour due to the others' willingness to sacrifice themselves for him. this is a common pattern for winners: in whichever order, they take the win once, and are once willing to sacrifice themselves to let another take it.

cut to wild life.

this time, it's grian in the final two once more, yet again against an – albeit more distant – ally. he's got a win under his belt already, so you might expect him to do what pearl did, what scott did, right? sacrifice their chance at glory to let another taste it for the first time.

and yet:

"I'm going to have to kill Joel"

"Can I win this? I worked so hard on this series, I'd love to win it!"

because here's an important thing about life series!grian: though he's willing to even the playing field, he's not willing to sacrifice – not when it matters. pledge your loyalty to right a wrong, yes; give lives to gain allies hours, yes; refuse others' sacrifices to fight on fair terms, yes. but in the end, no matter how much he wants to stick with friends, no matter how bad he feels about it, no matter how may "i'm so sorry"s he gives – he will put his own life first, in the end.

there's a reason he's the reason for so many of his allies' deaths, after all. and in its contrast, the wild life finale showcases this beautifully.

(and for the record, i don't see anything wrong with this from an out-of-univere perspective – it's been 5 seasons and 3.5 years since Grian's last win, and even if it hadn't been, it's the CCs place to judge fairness, not ours.)

I tried to give myself a little break from writing because I thought that's what I needed, but turns out the writing is load-bearing at this point. what I really needed was a break from writing stuff that I ever intend to polish up and show anyone. tapping out random comfort daydreams full of square brackets and 0 context is vitally necessary in fact

#i think its really interesting that eigongs mentorship fundamentally changed them both #for yi i feel its pretty obvious but with goumang you can see in the flashbacks her experiments are mostly small scale #and she hadnt done anything to herself yet (i think goumang modifying herself is a lot more meaningful than a lot of people realize)#before eigong decided to appoint her to the council #and then yi and goumang ended up having this like rivalry as eigongs students #i definitely think theres more under the surface than just goumang wanted to be the favorite #she worked her way up from the ground to be there and everyone else had some sort of advantage #even yi had the blessing from fusang or whatever you want to call it to catch eigongs eye #it mustve been infuriating for goumang to have worked so hard and then feel as though she wasnt as recognized #im not trying to sympathize with goumang over yi here or anything but i think her perspective on… basically anything going on with the sols #is fascinating and criminally underexplored #i think yi and goumang wouldve gotten along in another universe actually. they are not that different #too bad they are both DEAD FOREVER!!!! though #whats also interesting to me is that yi has some sort of respect (? he wont say that hes better than her before the fight) for goumang #but he still takes the consequences of her actions pretty seriously #nine sols #goumang nine sols #yi nine sols

(so... uh... how far into dai do you have to get before it starts being good?)

#i thought da2 was worse than dao in almost every way #repetitive undetailed environments boring combat less player influence over the story less customization of the player character etc.#but it had one shining redeeming quality #and that was the characters #who i actually cared about more than the characters in dao #and lucky for da2 characters are the most important aspect of a game (for me at least)#and good characters can carry an otherwise mediocre game pretty damn far #but i have yet to find the redeeming quality of dai #i mean... it's pretty i guess? though i still needed mods to make a character that looks decent bc the character creator was lacking #but the environment is pretty and detailed i will give it that #but i've been at this eight hours and almost every quest is just go get an item and then go bring it to someone?#there's really minimal story to these quests #and the characters seem interesting but i've barely had opportunities to talk to them #even the ambient party dialogue seems significantly rarer than it was in either dao or da2 #why should i care about people i'm not getting to know?#also do they really just go with 'templars and mages are both equally evil & crazy and we're gonna need to just kill all of them you see'#surely that can't be the whole conclusion to the templar-mage war?? there has to be more right??#i'll keep playing bc hopefully it gets better #to be fair i didn't actually like da2 until act 2 #i liked dao right away but it still took a bit to get really good #so i think there's still potential here #we will see i suppose #dragon age #dai #dragon age critical

#If there's anything positive to say about it #it's that it's at least a SPECTACULAR kind of bad #It's bad in the kind of way that makes you realize what is so bad about other entries in WC #Like the rosetta stone of things wrong with WC #In no other arc is the ableism misogyny and abuse apologia SO apparent. SO plain to see #And of course your mind's immediately drawn to Clear or Tom because they're so obviously awful as characters.#But even the characters they think are GOOD and frame as RIGHTEOUS are revealing!!#Sometimes even moreso!!#though to be clear I end up biting at Gray a lot more often than Clear because he's awful in a less immediately obvious way #but I think clear is literally THE worst character they have ever put in WC. It's not a contest. It's not even a consideration in my mind.#because at the end of the day. Clear is WHY the arc is so bad.#Gray is defending him and doing a shit ton of abuse apologia and generally being insufferable #but as a tool he is being used in the exact way they mean to use him.#And his USE is to SUPPORT CLEAR.#He may not be the main POV but the arc is ABOUT Clear. It's HIS story. EVERYTHING that happens is supposed to be for HIM.#I haven't gotten to Gray's death scene in my reread yet but I should actually reblog it over here on the main when I do #Because it says it.
